In this work the author sketches the fascinating scenery of Siberia at a time when it was hardly known to the outside world. No date is mentioned in the book, but the time of his travels commenced around the year 1840. His area of travel was extensive: from Kokhan on the west to the eastern end of Lake Baikal, and far south to the Chinese town of Tchin-is, including the immense Chain of the Syan mountain – on which he was the first European to lay eyes upon, as well as a large portion of the western Gobi desert. He traveled for seven years and a total of about 39,500 miles. The book is a narration of facts, taken from his journals kept often under conditions of extreme difficulty. It gives a lively description of the people, their customs, habits, religious practices and graphic description of the geography and flora and fauna. The book is divided into 29 chapters with 18 illustrations. There is an accompanying map of Siberia, Mongolia, Chinese Tartary and a park of central Asia to illustrate his routes. 19th century - Nineteenth century
