In rapidly transforming Asia, where social and cultural norms are undergoing a dynamic revolution, attention now needs to be focused on Asia's ageing population, particularly the women. As modernization and progress improve a people's quality of life by reducing mortality and allowing control of fertility, a paradoxical outcome is the challenge of an ageing population. Among the social issues which have arisen is the plight of women. Women in Asia are more vulnerable as many, having assumed the traditional subservient role in society, are not well placed to fend for themselves in a society in transition where socio-economic conditions have changed.
This book comprise a series of papers that give an insight to the conditions and concerns of women in selected societies across Asia, highlighting specific problems that should be addressed and proposals as to how they can be addressed, all of which would be useful to policy-makers and social organizations who have relegated these issues to the backroom but now need to look at them again urgently.
